Rwanda, known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills, is a small landlocked country in East Africa, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, including savannahs, rainforests, and the iconic mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park, as well as its remarkable journey of post-genocide reconciliation and development.

Fun Fact: In 2025, the African continent will host the UCI Road World Championships for the first time, with the capital of Rwanda, Kigali, providing the stage for this historic week of racing!

The currencies used in Rwanda are the Rwandan franc (RWF) and U.S. dollar (USD). The franc was introduced in 1964 to replace the East African shilling.  

Africa

Africa is the second largest and second most populous continent, covering approximately 20% of the Earth’s surface and situated primarily between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Made up of 54 recognised countries, Africa is renowned for its diverse cultures, rich history, and vast natural resources, including the Sahara Desert, the Nile River, and the Serengeti Plain. The continent is cut almost equally in two by the Equator, meaning most of Africa lies within the tropical region, bounded on the north by the Tropic of Cancer and on the south by the Tropic of Capricorn.

Rwanda has a mild tropical climate due to its high elevation, with cooler temperatures in the mountainous regions and warmer weather in the lower valleys. 

It experiences two rainy seasons, from March to May and October to December, while the dry season occurs from June to September.

Visa Guidelines

And when it comes to submitting the application, parents really are best placed. After all, no one knows the travelling student better.

Parents should ensure that their child's documents meet the official travel requirements for Rwanda.

If your child holds multiple passports and plans to travel with one, while their UAE residency visa is linked to another, please make sure they carry both passports during their trip!

Review the sample documents and the relevant official checklists to ensure that all specific criteria are met.

If your child is eligible for a VE-1, VP-1, or VP-2 visa, the system will recommend not applying online, as they can easily secure everything required upon arrival in Rwanda. All other nationalities requiring a visitor visa are eligible to obtain one on arrival. However, as the children will be travelling as part of a school trip and nobody wants to spend longer than necessary at border control, we highly recommend that parents/guardians apply for and pay for the visa before departure!

We recommend that all minors travelling internationally, without a parent or guardian, carry both a signed parental NOC and a school NOC with them. Samples of each are provided below. This can help to mitigate any potential issues at border control and streamline the immigration process.
